A survey by Just Eat of 8,800 Brits found that the majority of us struggle to correctly pronounce a large portion of popular foreign foods on takeaway menus. The shocking result was that 40% of people who weren’t confident in the pronunciation of certain dishes would avoid ordering them.

Some of the most popular mispronunciations are actually quite funny, and here are some of the most popular, to help you avoid these common mistakes in the future, and give you confidence when ordering.

Kung Fu Chicken – Kung Po Chicken

This dish is one of my personal favorites, so it makes me even sadder that so many people get it wrong! The dish is a sweet and spicy treat, often containing water chestnuts, peppers and onions in the sauce. It is becoming increasingly popular with Chinese takeaway fanatics.

Wogan Josh – Rogan Josh

A Rogan Josh is a popular Indian takeaway dish, main with loads of tomatoes and onions. It is not a dish named after the renowned radio presenter; Terry Wogan! Enjoy with a naan bread to mop up all the sauce.

Hashish Kebab – Shish Kebab

This popular kebab does not contain hashish, but more simply just chunks of marinated meat. Lamb Shish kebab is probably the most popular variety.

Porn Crackers – Prawn Crackers

This almost sounds rude, and I can’t imagine some of the reactions you would receive when ordering this down the phone. Prawn crackers are a popular snack for before your meal, don’t think anything else!

Pillow Rice – Pilau Rice

This popular rice is often yellow and coloured with saffron. Bay leaves and other herbs can be found in the rice too, to give it an aromatic and distinctive flavour. Best served with an Indian curry.

Crispy Acrobatic Duck – Crispy Aromatic Duck

I can assure you this duck has never had a gymnastics careers and this is not the real name of this order. This is one of the funnier mistakes, and when people order this it makes me giggle a little bit. I don’t even correct the mistake I find it so funny!

Cat Soup Curry – Katsu Curry

A katsu curry is a Japanese dish made from a piece of meat covered in breadcrumbs and fried. It is then served with a creamy curry sauce which tastes delicious. No cats have been hurt in the making of this dish.

Chicken Gel Frenzy – Chicken Jalfrezi

This is one of the most popular hot Indian dishes. There is plenty of diced chilli, peppers and onions in this dish. You could say it was a frenzy of heat and spice, but that’s still not the name.

One Tonne Soup – Won Ton Soup

Chinese Won Ton soup is a broth with prawn and pork dumplings inside it. Often having noodles inside the dish too, this is the perfect light and healthy takeaway option.

Pompadom – Poppadum

You could say that poppadums are the Indian equivalent to prawn crackers, and just like them they are often mispronounced. Takeaways must be fed up of hearing it spoken wrong, so now you have been warned!

Steve loves food and tries to get the order all correct when he orders Chinese delivery in Hackney or Chinese delivery in Lewisham.

All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt! – Lucy Van Pelt

A strangely reflective, even melancholy day. Is that because, unlike our cousins in the northern hemisphere, Easter is not associated with the energy and vitality of spring but with the more subdued spirit of autumn. – Hugh Mackay

There’s nothing better than a good friend, except a good friend with CHOCOLATE. – Linda Grayson

My mom used to say that Greek Easter was later because then you get stuff cheaper. – Amy Sedaris

Chocolate causes certain endocrine glands to secrete hormones that affect your feelings and behavior by making you happy. Therefore, it counteracts depression, in turn reducing the stress of depression. Your stress-free life helps you maintain a youthful disposition, both physically and mentally. So, eat lots of chocolate! – Elaine Sherman

Forget love; I’d rather fall in chocolate. – Anonymous

In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, you’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade. – Irving Berlin
Good Idea: Finding Easter eggs on Easter. Bad Idea: Finding Easter eggs on Xmas. – Jack Handy

Easter is not a passport to another world; it is a quality of perception for this one. – W.P. Lemon

I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day
“I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day” (Words by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow written during the American Civil War, 1863, put to music by John Calkin in 1872 )

In the 50’s my brother and I on Christmas Eve, would rig a security system of strings attached to cans and cocked cap pistols that would alert us when Santa would visit our home. We slept in bunk beds with my brother having the bottom bed and I the top, since I being older and more agile could respond more quickly from that height when our cans clattered and cap pistols fired. My father and mother would encourage our efforts with suggestions of where Santa might enter the house so that we would not overlook any possibility. Despite our best efforts we slept soundly through the night and found our Christmas gifts under the tree the next morning. My brother and I would pledge to redouble our commitment for next year’s effort while tearing into those wonderful packages wrapped in beautiful paper and bows.

As time has it, at some point we stopped with the security system and slowly developed what we thought was a more mature understanding of the meaning of Christmas which factored in the cost of gifts, judging who had the best “Christmas” for that year. Later we came to appreciate that there really was a cost for the gifts we received and the sacrifice our parents made to see their children’s eyes light up on Christmas morning. Now I think more clearly about the actual reason for the holiday in the first place and struggle with the contrast of reality.

“I heard the bells on Christmas Day” being one of those songs that underscores the contrast of “Peace on Earth, good will toward men” and the latest headlines of world news. It has such a poignant way with words and melody, that it reaches into my understanding with startling clarity. It lays out reality “for hate is strong and mocks the song”…. but doesn‘t stop there. It goes on to affirm that “God is not dead nor does He sleep” and “wrong shall fail, the right prevail.”

So, for this Christmas season I will affirm the words of this song in my heart and in my conversation by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Peace on Earth, goodwill to all!

Deadliest Catch still has its favorite old salt at the helm.

Though Cornelia Marie skipper Phil Harris died Feb. 9 after suffering a stroke, the sixth season of the Discovery Channel reality series will—as promised—feature Harris and his crew during his last king crab season.

And this time out looks like a doozy: sibling death threats, deckhand swaps, physical altercations between captains, strange weather and a daring rescue on the high seas.

And a last chance to enjoy the gruff, smoky wisdom of Capt. Phil.

Though the season is dedicated to “all souls sacrificed to the sea,” it’s clear which one of those souls will be foremost in the minds of viewers.

Phil Harris, the salty skipper of the Cornelia Marie on the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, has died. He was 53.

The deep-sea fisherman suffered a stroke on Jan. 29 and, although both his immediate and TV families were clinging to small signs of a recovery, he ultimately succumbed to the trauma on Tuesday.

“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad,” Harris’ sons, Jake and Josh, said in a statement. “Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”

Talking about his life at sea recently, Harris said there are certain superstitions he always abided by.

“I don’t leave on a Friday, ever,” he said, “because the last two times I did I blew up the main engine. So I just don’t do it.”

Harris was unloading his latest catch when he suffered his stroke on a Friday.

“We had a season once where we filled the boat up in three days—that was phenomenal fishing,” he said. “And then there’s days you can’t find a crab. It’s just back and forth.

“You’ve got to be a little bit twisted to do this job,” Harris admitted. “You know, you got to live right on the edge…It can get dicey.”

The Discovery Channel, which counts Deadliest Catch among its biggest hits, will also miss its accidental star.

“Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris,” the network said Tuesday night.

“He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil’s every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil’s sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew.”

Sig Hansen, captain of the Northwestern, changed his website’s homepage to read: “Phil Harris was called home and will forever be remembered…”

Emeril Lagasse is trying his hand at the talk show format as he launches a new weekly prime-time series that will mix equal parts music, celebrities and food.

Like Lagasse’s long-running Food Network series, “Emeril Live!”, his new hour-long “The Emeril Lagasse Show” on the ION Television network will be taped before a live audience and feature a band on set.

The Food Network ceased production of “Emeril Live” in 2007. In early 2008, the rights to Lagasse’s franchise of books, television shows and kitchen products were purchased by Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., which will share production oversight of the new show with ION Television.

Lagasse continues to host “Emeril Green,” a Planet Green cable series in which he helps novice cooks prepare wholesome meals. “The Emeril Lagasse Show” will air Sundays at 8 p.m. beginning March 28.

So I know, what kind of Chef am I that I just now saw the movie Julie & Julia? I have been meaning to, really! Just been busy as you can all see….

So I saw the movie and I liked it. I liked the fact it highlighted French cookery and they mentioned the Le Cordon Bleu, which is also the program that I completed as well. That was a major plus. The film depicts events in the life of chef Julia Child in the early years in her culinary career, contrasting her life with Julie Powell, who aspires to cook all 524 recipes from Child’s cookbook during a single year. This is a good idea, why I did not think of that I will never know LOL. The thing I did not like about the movie was the actress who played Julie, Amy Adams. She is just too mousy for my tastes.

The movie was entertaining, so I will probably buy it at some point. Meryl Streep was just fantastic, she had that role down to a science proving once again that she is a great actress!

Hard to believe that a woman, Julie Powell got so famous as a blogger/writer from that stunt is just amazing. Some of us who run these blogs work very hard to produce content and promote our blogs. Julie Powell’s blog was nothing more than words against a white background, so very plain. But! This was when blogging was still in the early stages.

So Its a good movie, so if you like to cook, watch it!

By the light of only the moon I am
Alone with only the fear who dare to make me shake
Something awaits me around the next shadow
For here I am in the dark.
Think eggs, think nightmares.
