Del Monte Foods says it will cut salt by 20 pct

Food producer Del Monte Foods Co. said Thursday it plans to cut sodium by at least 20 percent in all of its vegetable, tomato and broth products that contain added salt by 2015.

The move includes Del Monte’s namesake brand as well as S&W, Contadina and College Inn.

Other food makers such as ConAgra Foods Inc. and Kraft Foods Inc. have been cutting sodium under pressure from shoppers and the government to make food healthier.

On Monday, Schwan’s Food Service Inc., which serves pizza to about three-quarters of the nation’s schools, said it is cutting the salt in those pizzas by at least 10 percent.

That’s the right move. Salt is the white death. :P

    • You said it, my mom had her gal bladder removed because it burst for a gal stone infection and her doctor said that her love for salty food had contributed.

good move by the way Del Monte!

Thats the right way to go, I like del monte products and it’s good to see them be focussed in a healthcentric manner.

It’s difficult for me to reduce the volume of salt in my dish. I know it’s bad! I’d like to try del monte products. Health is most important!

  4. thank you for you post, what you said is really reanable

Hopefully more makers of prepared foods will follow suit. They use excessive amounts of salt in far too many things. Give me low salt/no salt options so I can decide how much or how little salt to add to suit my taste or diet restrictions.

  6. Instead digging on salt, iodized salt is better. its also good to cut it all down. but if you really cant help it, drink loads of water.

  7. Marc Strub says:

It is great that food companies are becoming more responsible with the health benefits that their product can provide. Hope more will follow too.

  8. @Humberto – I also use iodized salt when I cook. It does cut down the salt intake of the food I serve at home.
