Hot Dogs To Get Warning Label: ‘kid-friendly’ food Can Be Hazard

Hot dogs may soon join the dangerous company of products that carry a warning label. But it won’t point out the unhealthful amounts of fat, salt and preservatives they contain.

The American Academy of Pediatrics wants a label cautioning parents that the ballpark staple poses a choking hazard to young children.  The academy also would like to see the franks “redesigned” so that they would be less likely to stick in a kid’s throat.

Choking is a leading cause of injury and death among kids, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. About 73 kids die in the U.S. from choking on food yearly, but government agencies and food manufacturers aren’t paying enough attention to how to minimize these risks.

The AAP is recommending not just a warning label on franks but a recall of foods that pose a choking risk, and a commitment from food manufacturers to redesign existing foods to minimize that risk.

Many foods thought to be “kid-friendly” are actually a great choking risk.

It’s sad that food get mislabelled like that as if obesity and disease is not damaging enough. Food corps often pay fines and continue doing what they did as if nothing happened.
