Pour a glass of fresh, clean, filtered water without opening the refrigerator or a bottle with this countertop water-filtration system. Attractively housed in brushed stainless steel, the 2-gallon unit dispenses 500 mL of hot water (194 degrees F), 800 mL of cold water (44 degrees F), or room-temperature water. Its upper water tank holds approximately 1/2 gallon of unfiltered water, while the lower water tank holds about a gallon of filtered water. Better than bottled water, the countertop filtration system reduces contaminants that can alter taste and purity. It reduces chlorine (97.5 percent), mercury (92.8 percent), benzene (84.1 percent), cadmium (96.6 percent), copper (85.0 percent), tetrachloroethylene (92.5 percent), and toluene (89.8 percent). The included filter lasts for about 80 gallons or three to four months of average household use. Other details include a 12-week filter timer, a flip-top lid for convenient filling, a removable water tank, blue and red LED “water-ready” indicator lights, two separate spigots, and simple push-button controls with a child safety lock on the hot-water option. Weighing about 14 pounds, the water-filtration system measures 10 by 10 by 14-1/2 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

The cinnamony scent of hot mulled cider simmering on the stove. Here are instructions for how to make hot mulled cider at home.

1. Pour one gallon of fresh cider into a large pot on the stove or into a crockpot or slow cooker.

2. Add a half cup of brown sugar.

3. Place 1 teaspoon of whole cloves, 1 teaspoon of whole allspice, and 3 cinnamon sticks on a square of cheesecloth and tie up. Add to the pot.

4. Heat the cider to a boil, stirring regularly. Leave the pot uncovered so that you and your family or guests can enjoy the warm, delicious aroma.

5. Once the cider boils, lower the setting to simmer for at least another 15 minutes to allow for thorough infusion of the spices. Stir occasionally.

6. Remove the spices from the pot and ladle hot mulled cider into mugs or other glasses designed for hot beverages.

Tips:

1. If you don’t have cheesecloth on had, use a tea ball or a coffee filter to hold the spices.
2. Add a splash of rum or brandy to really warm up a chilly day.
3. For a decorative touch, you can stud an apple with cloves and allow that to float in your cider pot instead of adding cloves to your spice bag.
