I used to be a very fussy eater. I can still remember the feeling of my ears burning with shame as the teacher told my parents how I tried to smuggle a piece of blancmange into the bin to avoid eating it. Worst of all, the blooming horrible piece of pudding stained my shirt and tie with a pink mark which we could never get out afterwards.
This fussiness stayed with me into later life and I thought that I was destined to be a picky eater for the rest of my life.
Tastier and Healthier than Chocolate
When I go to the shop in my local garage forecourt I normally head straight for the usual old chocolate bars and bags of crisps. However, after that conversation with my partner I decided to give my eyes a chance to find something better for me. The first thing they did was lead me to something I had never paid attention to before; Biltong. I had seen some sort of Biltong packaging in the shop in the past but I hadn’t really paid any attention to it on my march towards the chocolate bars. As I turned the colorful Biltong packaging over in my hand I realized that it contained strips of dried meat. It sounded a bit too exotic for my taste but just as I was putting it back I thought about trusting my eyes. They had led me to it and this was my first chance to put them to the test. I bought and after tasting it rather gingerly I discovered a brilliant new snack which is healthy and far tastier than chocolate.
Greek Food Does the Job
There is a row of Greek restaurants on my way to work. They all put bowls of stuff in the window display and I sometimes vaguely wondered what it was. After my experience of being attracted to the Biltong packaging I paid attention the next time I passed them. My eyes rested on one of the plates and for the first time ever I thought about how tasty it might be. I almost couldn’t believe it as I walked in and order a plate of whatever it was sitting in the window. It was the most exotic dish I had ever ordered in my life and I still don’t know what it was called. Anyway, the most important thing is that it was lovely and it also seemed very healthy. There were a good number of vegetables in it, although I couldn’t name more than a couple of them.
An Alternative Foodie Holiday
I always enjoy the food when I am on holiday. In fact, it is usually one of the parts of the trip I most look forward to. However, I tend to stick to the kind of meals and snacks which I am used to from back home. After my previous experiences I decided to make my next trip abroad more exciting. We went to Spain and I kept my eyes open for new things to try. Eventually we came across a tapas bar I liked the look of. In a couple of hours I tried more squid, ham, chorizo and fish than I thought I would ever eat in my whole life. As well as eating great food I also discovered that trusting my eyes to choose the right eating place meant that I had gained some unforgettable holiday memories as well.
If you see some Biltong packaging, Greek meals or tapas then trust your eyes to lead you to something tasty which could change your outlook on food.

I actually tend to be more experimental when I go to a different place. I’ll be like, well I’m already here, so might as well.
